You know it, Feel it here,

A whim, a fancy, to point it out,

Wondering if it was just another emotional bout...

Well, here in TAPMI campus it’s definitely not a “bout”. The buzz is there, the cause for it no doubt is Atharva! If you are an ardent Harry Potter fan, try recollecting how the Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry suddenly transforms itself and puts on a completely new garb. That’s exactly what has happened to TAPMI. Last evening, you remember seeing the same dull brick and mortar walls, and next morning you are wondering who painted Atharva all over the place!

Walking around the campus you can see bright posters, and tall banners adorning most of the walls. The place looks like it has suddenly broken out into a riot of colours. The mess, the academic block, TAPMI greens... all of it have miraculously altered, and are now united by one spirit, one sensation that runs widespread, Atharva is here!

It’s not just the campus, but the streets of Manipal and Udupi as well which have been adorned with Atharva decorations and promotions! The majestic banners bring a huge deal of pride to every single TAPMIan, for he belongs to the family which is organizing one of the biggest ever events to hit Manipal!

The zest has mesmerized the students too! You could find a few pacing around loaded with sheets, chart papers etc. while others gather in groups, and have fervent discussions about what events to participate in. The campus of a management school never seemed so pulsating and animate with vigour! Just being here, in and around the campus, makes you want to plummet in and contribute to the gung ho.

Many students are still unaware of their true potential and Atharva becomes a giant step towards sensitising them and motivating students to develop interest towards application of management skills beyond the pages of their books. The events aim to unleash the managerial potential within.

More than the fest or the events or the competitions, it’s the mounting, building up liveliness, the vibrancy around the campus, that has made the wait for the climax a gala event in itself. The anticipation for Atharva mysteriously manages to glorify the journey!

An insatiable hunger for challenge is the only pre-requisite for you to come to Atharva – TAPMI’s annual B-School fest. Like every year, the three day event is action packed with a host of competitions like the ever popular Quiz on the Beach (QOTB), the marketing game Chakravyuh, the traditional stock trading contest – Outcry and many more.

We at Atharva understand that preparation and participation involves a sizeable effort and costs time. And to make your efforts worth it, Atharva is designed, unlike many B-School fests across the country, to offer a mix of business-related as well as cultural events. When you have the talent, then we will provide you the platform to prove it. Vibes, the inter college dance competition for the twinkle toes and tapping boots, has always been one of the most sought after events that sees participation from several institutions across the country.

Polemic, the corporate debate, is to be moderated by T.V. Mohandas Pai, former CEO of Infosys. This year, it boasts of an impressive list of speakers like politician Dinesh Gundu Rao, Madhu Goud Yaskhi and Dushyant Singh, a member of the 15th Lok Sabha of India. The topic for this year is ‘India in the 21st Century: Vision, Hopes and Aspirations.’ We have seen them battle it out in politics. It’s time to watch it live at Polemic!

Across various industries, HR managers look for those who can put the theory into practice, apply the textbook in the real world. Are you able to co-relate trends in the industry? Or, is there a creative genius in you looking to empower a brand or shape a company’s strategy? Events managed at Atharva are of a certain kind –which seeks to quiz the B-school grad, to intrigue, to test the skill set and decision making abilities while dealing with ambiguity and surprise. Atharva, as a concept has evolved immensely over the years and at TAPMI it has been a collaborative effort involving external functional committees viz. Marketing & General Management (MGM), HR Fora, Social Endeavour Group (SEG), the Finance and Operations Forums and the like to aid the event design. Be it a stock market simulation or ensuring that a B-plan recommendation is implemented in practice; the functional committees have been the proverbial ‘cog in the wheel’.

In the previous years, events such as QOTB have received special mention in a number of newspapers and online blogs. Similarly, the media partners for Atharva 2011-12 will be The Hindu’s Business Line and Manipal based online journal ‘Chill Maadi’. Yet another proud moment for TAPMI… A milestone for Atharva...

T. V. Mohandas Pai, former CFO of Infosys, was on an official visit to our beautiful TAPMI campus. He was voted ‘CFO of the Year’ in 2001 by IMA India. He won the ‘Best CFO in India’ award from Finance Asia in 2002, and ‘Best Chief Financial Officer in India’ in the Best Managed Companies poll conducted by Asia Money in 2004.

Mr T. V. Mohandas Pai was here on an official visit to meet our respected Director and Deans. Post the interactions, he also enquired about the progress of ATHARVA and discussed various topics worth debating upon at POLEMIC, where he will be the Moderator. POLEMIC is an event wherein we get to see the industry stalwarts and academicians from diverse backgrounds battle it out on stage in an exciting and thrilling corporate debate against their resolute opponents. Though the topic for the debate has not been finalised yet, it willl surely be a current hot topic concerning business, politics, corruption, inflation, cultural renewal, etc. which has an impact on our country as a whole. With the arguments and counter arguments that will be flowing in, one will be able to appreciate the multiple perspectives which are backed by sound experience and knowledge.

The discussion also revolved around the choice of speakers, where Mr. Mohandas Pai insisted that there should be representatives of today’s youth. Our focus would therefore be to invite young and successful entrepreneurs, politicians, socialists, who provide a completely different perspective towards prevailing issues.

Indeed a moment to cherish for Atharva, which has taken a giant leap forward in leaving an indelible mark for years to come! With our theme being “Renaissance” this year, we would like to draw the attention to the power of youth in transforming the outlook of the society and future managers in the process of gearing them up for all future endeavours. Looking forward to a prodigious stimulation of neurons…….. :)

OK, we made that up. But with good reason, of course. J

Atharva ’12 is to be held in Jan, from the 20^th to the 22^nd. However, the wheel has already been set in motion from early November, with something that has been familiar to every b-school ever associated with the event - the Waves.

Fancily named, yet crucially important, the Waves constitutes of two parts ; the first of which is Atharva Online - exciting online quizzes ranging over a plethora of management streams designed to give students across the country a taste of what they can expect, come Jan. And of course, considering the interest we have seen over the years for Atharva's Management Games, preliminary quizzes for every event are a part of the Waves mix.

Innovative questions served up with the typical Atharvan joi de vivre, and the prospect of earning some extra pocket money off those grey cells for the reluctant geniuses, Waves was kicked off on November 15^th with the unique Sports-Business quiz, Bizkick.

Specifically designed for those who could tell their Robinhos from their Mourinhos, the online Bizkick quiz was taken with great enthusiasm by over 150+ students across the country, culminating with team XIM-B taking home a sweet deal of INR 2000.

And it was ON. Swiftly followed by Brandish, the- 'You guessed it!'- Brand Quiz, which saw an exponential increase in the level of participation.

During every single quiz, the Atharva Den housed a group of anxious and excited Atharvans, few of them monitoring the technicalities, and few others guarding the phone - all set to respond to participant queries! Next in line was the tough yet necessary task of shortlisting students who had to come down to TAPMI to be a part of Atharva and test their mettle against students from other top b-schools.

Preliminary quizzes for almost all the major events have seen an overwhelming participation from major colleges. On the way, we have seen fine examples of sportsmanship and class, all culminating in us identifying the lucky (!) teams who will be representing their respective colleges for OUTCRY - the unique trading game, CHAKRAVYUH – the Marketing Maze. SAHAYOG and SANCHAY are on the cards next.

As a wise man once said : Nothing can substitute true spirit. Atharva Online will continue to surprise, entertain and tickle those rusty ol’ brain cells (hopefully) with newer quizzes up until the D-day. J

And how it all began....

Amidst all the anticipation, commotion and chaos that surrounded the process of getting into committees, Atharva was overwhelmed with the number of applications for its team this year. More than half of the batch had listed Atharva as their top preference! A “Live Atharva” Campaign was conducted that tested the newbies on their knowledge of Atharva. This concluded with the winners sharing breakfast with the Mystery Atharvan, who was none other than the Chairman, Prof. Gururaj Kidiyoor. What a way to start off!

3 panels simultaneously conducted the process of interviews for a couple of days. These grueling sessions nearly extended into the wee hours of the morning most times. The seniors sure had a tough time selecting the special team, who would keep the spirit of Atharva alive!

The new team was welcomed into the den, only to realize that their first task was to clean up the place. They sure did a wonderful job of not just cleaning up, but making it feel like home. The seniors who were pleasantly surprised, rewarded and welcomed the juniors with an amazing evening at the beach, a splendid dinner and a huddle on the greens that led to a warm bonding of the entire team.

Work Hard, Party Harder! The message was clear! Portfolios were assigned and the juniors got to work. The seniors, of course, have always been there, supporting and guiding the vibrant and enthusiastic team. The immediate task at hand was to create a website for Atharva. To put this in place, the design, creative and content team worked at length. In less than a month, a dazzling website was set up!

As the event draws closer, a lot of expectations, a lot of excitement is in the air. Ask the Atharvans what is in store, Is Atharva 2011 going to be the grandest ever? They say this is just the beginning! Watch this space for more.

Renaissance - What it means to Atharva 2012

Several centuries ago, the light of renaissance changed the future of a continent and decided the fate of the world. Time witnessed development so rapid that it could hardly keep up. It was a courageous few who were looked back upon by future generations as the architects of the present. This year, 2011, will also be seen by future B-Schools as the time that TAPMI changed the world of B-School competitions forever. Atharva 2011-12 will usher in a new era of B-school competitions by undergoing a complete metamorphosis from its earlier form. Atharva of yester years was consistently ranked as one of the top B-School fests in the country, and the few who have been part of it are testimony to the fact. But there was still something wanting, the desire to exceed expectations and set precedents, and from this desire spawned the new Atharva.

Atharva overhauled is bigger and better than ever before. Veterans from various fields have congregated and associated themselves this year with one of the biggest B-School fests in the country. Mr. T.V. Mohandas Pai, former CFO of Infosys and the best CFO in India for 2001, will be the Moderator for Polemic, our cut-throat, no holds bar, corporate debate. Mr.Giri Balasubramaniam, one of the biggest names in quizzing in India, will be the quiz master for Quiz on The Beach, a scenic setting to a nerve wracking battle of minds and wits. Xpressions brings to you electrifying performances by the dynamic duo Salim-Sulaiman, which is sure to set the atmosphere ablaze in the small and peaceful town of Manipal. It is not every day that one can see T.V.Mohandas Pai, Giri Balasubramaniam and Salim-Sulaiman on a single platform, but Athrava is all about revolutionizing conventions. Apart from an enviable list of high profile guests Atharva 2011-12 has an array of events, each of which has been meticulously planned to bring out the best in a contestant, if he or she proves their worth that is. Events such as Abhivyakti, Sankalp, YBL, Outcry, Sanchay, Chakravyuh, and Sahayog are one of their kind, and puts forth a platform for the best minds in the country to battle it out, with new challenges like never faced before. OutCry - The TAPMI Exchange

Move aside Sensex, Nifty or even Dow Jones Index……….TAPEX is here.

The game is a simulation of Open – outcry system, the way trading used to happen at BSE before they moved on to electronic trading. There are no market makers, be it humans or systems! Traders would have to themselves find potential buyers/sellers, according to their requirement, negotiate and finally decide upon the price at which the trade is going to happen and then come to TAPEX (TAPMI Stock Exchange) for the transfer of assets. Conveying the price at which one wants to buy/sell a particular security would be done by shouting out or by using hand signals or could be even a mixture of both.
Can already imagine the excitement? Finance can indeed be fun…

So start exercising your vocal chords and be ready to shout your lungs out while we get to you three hours of nerve-wrecking trading filled with loads of Fun, Frolic and Drama!

Sankalp 2009-10 is Launched!!!

Sankalp is an opportunity for management students to use their creativity and innovativeness to come up with a viable business plan. Sankalp 2009-10 invites entries from management students who do not see the sense in earning money for someone else and would like to go at it alone. So get up, and develop that idea of yours and unleash the spirit of enterprise in you.

And the unique proposition of Sankalp is that if the VCs judging the event commit that if the winning entry meets their investment criteria, they would even fund the idea to a certain extent.

Sankalp 2008-09:
Sankalp 2008-09 had one of India's foremost Venture Capitalists 'JumpStartUp' judging the event. The potential amount they were ready to put in the winning B-Plan (subject to conditions) was upwards of Rs. 1 crore.

Sankalp 2009-10 in brief:
Each participating team can have a maximum of 3 members. In the first stage, each team will have to register themselves in this registration link. Each team will then have to submit an executive summary in soft copy to atharva.tapmi@gmail.com. Based on the executive summary, teams will be shortlisted for the next stage.

In stage II, the shortlisted teams will have to submit their entire business plan in a hard and soft copy to the Atharva Team. Based on the complete business plan, a final shortlist will be released.

The teams that are shortlisted for the final round will get an opportunity to revise their B-Plan by interacting with the intellectual capital of TAPMI, Manipal. They will get to come down to TAPMI and present their B-Plan in front of the Venture Capitalists and TAPMI faculty.

The winning team get prizes worth Rs. 50,000 while the runners-up get prizes worth Rs. 30,000.

Induction into Atharva

After all the hype and chaos surrounding the application and processes for various committees, the d-day finally arrived when the list came out. And as fate would have it, there it was – my name under Atharva – SPH (‘Scheduling, Planning and Hospitality’ for the un-initiated ). A team of 13 of us from PGP-1 laden with the daunting task of making Atharva 2010 happen. Of course we had the senie team to guide and mentor us.

Well as they say, no work is complete without a bit of fun. So as a ‘surprise’ party, we were taken for a nice outing to a location I certainly will not disclose. With pouring rain on the way, it felt like engineering days all over again. Some day later maybe I’ll blog bout me, the rain and pune. Coming back to the induction party, after having a gala time with the whole gang, we pushed off for dinner at one of the posh restaurants at Udupi. Trust me, the sight of warm soup and hot snacks is enough to make you weak in the knees especially when you are soaked in all the right and wrong places thanks to the rain. Some day that was. Phew !

So after a proper session of fun and play, the team got down to business from the next day onwards. Portfolios were assigned and timelines were discussed. Looks like a lot of hard work awaits us as Atharva draws closer. But as some great man said, “when you gotta go, you gotta go”. So the spirits are high, and the common resolve is to make Atharva 2010 the grandest ever. More on this in the coming blogs.

What is Outcry?

Open outcry is a communication method between professionals on a stock exchange or futures exchange which involves shouting and the use of hand signals to transfer information primarily about buy and sell orders. The trading floor where this takes place is called a pit.

Over the years, this method of trading has been replaced by electronic systems. Atharva gives you a chance to live up the ‘Dalaal Street’ of India once again. Participants shall be given an initial corpus of funds and asked to trade among themselves by use of whatever signaling mechanisms they can think of. Be it vocal or hand or any other. Interruptions and shocks shall prevail in the game too. Find the buyer, match your frequency and square the deal.

So start exercising your vocal chords and be ready to shout your lungs out while we get to you three hours of nerve-wrecking trading filled with loads of Fun, Frolic and Drama!

The shortlisted teams are called for the final round at TAPMI during Atharva in January.

How about getting on to some real action now?

It is time for a litmus test for all those who think they have mastered the concepts of Marketing. Here is the occasion where you finally need to apply the STPs, the 4Ps and all the business gyaan taught in B-School classrooms.

Calling on all those marketing geniuses who believe in toiling and getting the hand dirty rather than sipping coffee over long boardroom discussions on pie-charts, graphs and trend lines. This game would give a participant a chance to run the entire show all by themselves, a one time chance to be a retailer. Teams would be managing real money and running their own custom made KIOSKS. From product assortment to price, location to promotions you will be deciding what your retail outlet would be all about.

To sum it all, it will be a battle of the best marketers and a spectacle to watch. If you think you are street-smart then this is the place to prove you are.

Skills required:

Basic knowledge of marketing and the uncanny ability to think on one’s heel.

Rules:

Each team can have a minimum of 2 members and maximum of 3 members.

Teams would be shortlisted from a preliminary round, based on a write-up on current topics relating to marketing. Both 1^st year and 2^nd year students are eligible to play.

Wal-Mart fails to make profit in China! Keeps loosing on sales ranking, year after year

After closing down its operations in South Korea and Germany, and downsizing operations in Japan, Wal-Mart — the world’s largest retailer– is finding the going to be tough in mainland China as well. Not only, the giant retailer has failed to make profits in its 12 years long existence in the world’s most populated and fastest growing country, its sales ranking vis-a-vis its counterparts is also steadily going down. China’s Department of Trade, which provides information on relative strengths of retailers in the country, has ranked Wal-Mart at No 30 in 2005, compared to 20th in 2004, and 17th in 2003. In a significant move, Wal-Mart has recently announced to locate its Asia headquarters in Hongkong. This was in contrast to earlier belief that its China headquarter in Shenzhen would also be chosen to act as its Asia headquarters. Sanghai and Singapore were incidentally also in running for the honour. Shenzhen will continue to act as Wal-Mart’s Global Procurement Center, though. Wal-Mart is hoping a lot from its proposed foray into India with Bharti Retail. While, it has set up a joint venture with Bharti for wholesale ‘cash and carry’ retail, it is offering technical and sourcing services to Bharti for front-end retail. Bharti has already unveiled its front-end supermarket chain called Easy Day in Punjab, the joint venture is expected to rollout its first wholesale store in early 2009.

Quiz on the Beach - QOTB

The light ocean breeze, the cool soothing sands, a challenging quiz master and a vibrant crowd buzzing with excitement, set the mood for a novel concept in quizzing - The Quiz On The Beach. Set against the backdrop of the Kaup Lighthouse, QOTB is an arena that tests the participants’ business knowledge and aptitude for spontaneity. The event, complemented by informal audience games, has proved to be Atharva’s biggest crowd puller. The country's only B-school quiz on the beach is a totally unique quizzing experience which has over the years created a successful brand. The event invited corporate participation for the first time at Atharva 2004 and ever since proved to be one of the most keenly contested quizzes. Mr. Giri “Pickbrain” Balasubramanium of the TATA Crucible fame conducted the event last year. The event is open to corporate participation as well as student participation.

Young Business Leader - YBL

The T. A. Pai Memorial Young Business Leader (YBL) is one of the most coveted and reputed events on the B-school circuit. With participation from only the top student from the top B-schools selected by their respective directors, it truly is a clash of the titans. The most prestigious event of its kind, YBL usually carries prize money around Rs. 1 Lakh.

In the search for the ideal leaders for tomorrow, the participants are put through a rigorous framework. Sankalp is a competition that helps you explore your innovative side and involves identifying, conceiving and conceptualising viable and profitable business ventures. And Sankalp 2008-09 is officially open for entries. So get your creative juices flowing and bring out the entrepreneur in you.

Event in Brief:

A team of maximum 3 members, in order to participate in 'Sankalp 2008-09', will have to first submit an 'Executive Summary' of the business plan by soft copy to atharva09.tapmi@gmail.com . This submission has to be done before 30th October, 2008 11:55 pm. The Executive Summary should not be more than four pages long (including the cover page).

Based on the Executive Summary, some teams will be shortlisted for the next stage. In this stage, the team will have to submit one hard copy and one soft copy of the complete business plan. The last date for the submission of the soft copy is 30th November, 2008 while the hard copy would have to reach by 3rd December, 2008. For the address to which the hard copy has to be sent, please refer the 'Sankalp Leaflet' available in the Atharva website.

Final entries will be shortlisted based on the complete business plan provided above. These finalists will be given an opportunity to interact with the judges who evaluated their business plan. This will give the finalists an opportunity to improve upon their original idea. These finalists would then have to present their Business Plan in front of a panel of judges during Atharva.

Sankalp - The Business Plan contest

Conceptualized and organized by the students of TAPMI in 1999, SANKALP, was the first national level business plan formulation contest. SANKALP provides a platform to the budding entrepreneurs to test run their entrepreneurial skills. The famed event gets an overwhelming response to the call for business plans. The business plans are then evaluated on the basis of their technical, financial and market feasibility, uniqueness of idea, quality of presentation and report writing.
